Bevacizumab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody that blocks angiogenesis by inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A).[2] VEGF-A is a chemical signal that stimulates angiogenesis in a variety of diseases, especially in cancer.
Bevacizumab is usually given intravenously every 14 days. In colon cancer, it is given in combination with the chemotherapy drug 5-FU (5-fluorouracil), leucovorin, and oxaliplatinor irinotecan. For treatment of eye diseases it is injected intravitreously.
